Daphne Anne: Four Months

Weight: 13 lbs. 4 oz. (31% - our skinny minnie)
Height: 25.4 in. (89% tall and skinny - she's a Wagner!)
Sleep: Daphne still takes pretty regular naps during the day, probably about 4 or 5. We've completely transitioned her into her crib (it's SO nice to have our bedroom back!) and she goes down for the night between 7:00-7:30. She wakes up around 3 am and 6 am to nurse and then she goes right back to sleep. Every once in awhile she'll only wake up once, but its usually twice. For the most part, she's a pretty easy sleeper!
Eating: Now that she's sleeping longer at night, she nurses every 2 hours during the day. She nurses on one side per feeding for about 10-15 min.

Diapers: Size one.
Clothing: I've had to bite the bullet and get rid of her 3 month sleepers, they were some of my favorites so it was kinda difficult. She still fits in size 3-6 onesies and pants, but she's too long for the 3 month sleepers.
Mood: She is loving mom and dad right now, she …

What All Mothers Have in Common

Before I had my daughter, I assumed that mothers were mostly defined by whatever method of parenting they adopted.

The breastfeeding mom.
The formula mom.
The attachment parenting mom.
The Baby Wise mom.
The scheduling mom.
The free-spirited mom.

You get the idea.

I know I have so much to learn as a new mom, but I could not have been more wrong about my assumption.

I was advised to join a new moms group at our church when Daphne was about 4 weeks old (which I 100% recommend to new moms, if nothing else, it gets you out of the house once a week). I didn't really know what to expect, since Daphne and I weren't exactly pros at going out. I walked in and was met with cheery smiles and breakfast goodies.

It didn't take long after sharing our stories and spending some time together every week to find the nursing moms, formula moms, scheduling moms, attachment moms and so on.

And I thought that the whole time would be spent with each mother defending her personal opinion about mo…

Daphne Anne: Three Months

Weight: I haven't weighed her in a while but the last time I believe it was somewhere around 12 lbs.
Height: Haven't measured her...bad Mom?
Sleep: After her 7:00 pm feeding, she would go to sleep until about 3:00 or 5:00 am. I would feed her again and then put her back in her bassinet and then she would wake again around 7:00-9:00 am. But for the past week its been pretty rough (I'm assuming growth spurt). She has been having a pretty hard time going to sleep after a 7:00 pm feeding, she would usually FINALLY be asleep by 9:00. And then she's been waking up around 12:00-1:00 am wanting to nurse and then again around 4:00 am. then she would wake up for the day around 6:00 am. I'm really hoping she gets back to her old routine soon!
Eating: She goes about 2 1/2 - 3 hours between feedings and feeds for about 10-20 minutes on one side per feeding.
Diapers: She's still in size 1 diapers!
Clothing: She fits best in most 0-3 months clothes but we have a few 3-6 m…

Daphne Anne: Two Months

Weight: 10.8 lbs.
Height: 23 in.
Sleep: After she eats we put her in her to bed around 7:30-8:00. I do a "dream-feed" between 10:30-11:00 and then she usually wakes up wanting to nurse around 3:00-4:00 am. Then she will sleep until 6:00-7:00 am. So all in all she sleeps about 6-7 hours a night.
There were a few days last week where she was not sleeping at all. She slept for no longer than 2 hours at a time. I'm chalking it up to a growth spurt, but boy were those days rough!
Eating: She goes about 3 and a half hours between feedings. She nurses on one side per feeding for about 10-20 minutes.
Diapers: We moved up to size one diapers! I have to say that Pampers Swaddlers are still my favorite.  She has about 6-7 wet diapers a day and 3-4 poopy diapers.

Clothing: Daphne has completely outgrown all of her NB clothes! It was a sad day when I moved all her 3-6 month clothes into the top drawer! But then I got excited because she doesn't have hardly any warm clothes f…

Daphne Anne: One Month

Weight: 8 lbs. 6 oz. (at her last appointment)

Height: 20.5 in.

Sleep: The first few weeks we were trying to get her weight back up (she had lost about 14% of her birth weight) so we were nursing every 2 hours with one 3-4 hour stretch at night. Now that her weight isn't a concern anymore, she sleeps after her last feeding of the day (between 9-10 pm) for 5-7 hours.

Eating: Daphne basically stopped nursing around day three (which from what I've read is the hardest day for nursing mommas). It was a super stressful time! We even fed Daphne breast milk from a dropper while at the breast, to try to make sure she was getting something. Our pediatrician told us it was crucial to go to a lactation consultant as soon as possible. The lactation consultant made me feel better by telling me that I was doing everything right, but Daphne was just a lazy sucker and had a high palette. She had me start using a nipple guard and put us on a strict feeding routine (offer one breast, then give …

On Being a Mom...

"Once you see her, you'll be so overwhelmed with love for her."
"You don't even know how much you're going to love her until she gets here."
"It's going to be crazy how much you will instantly love her!"
These are a few of the things that people said to me about the arrival of my daughter and how a Mother's love is so instantaneous and so strong. I guess I believed them, but there really isn't a way to understand how you're going to love someone that you really don't know yet.
My husband and I were talking about our daughter's birth the other day and we both agreed that the second we laid eyes on her, we loved her. But we also had no clue who this little person was.
It's strange to look down at this little baby that you've been carrying for 9 months and who you honestly and truly love, but....who are they?
My daughter is only three weeks old.
But I know her gassy smile.  I know her coughing face when she swall…

Daphne Anne: My Birth Story

On June 23rd I began noticing some early signs of labor. I was only 34 weeks along, so I decided to call my doctor and find out if there was any concern. I spoke with the doctor's assistant and described the symptoms that I had been having (excessive mucus when using the restroom, frequent and strong Braxton Hicks contractions, loose stool, pink spotting and menstrual-like cramping) she told me that it sounded like I had lost my mucus plug but that it wasn't really a "thing" and that I would be fine. What the heck?! So I tried to take it easy and drink a ton of water as the symptoms continued for a couple days until my next doctor's appointment.
At our appointment I described my symptoms to my doctor and told her that the assistant had told me that it was "nothing" and made me feel like I was one of those overreacting first time moms, but everything in me told me that something was happening. She had a look of concern on her face and told me that she …

39 Week Bump Update

How far along: 39 weeksGender: GirlWeight gain: I've gained 3.8 lbs. this week. My overall weight gain is 11.6 lbs.Maternity clothes: Still wearing my maternity shirts and shorts, occasionally my maxi skirts. I've been doing so much walking that it's mostly comfortable to wear my shorts and t-shirts.  Stretch Marks: Two marks on either side of my belly. It's been super itchy this week, making me wonder if I have more stretch marks to expect! Belly button in or out: In. Sleep: Although I have to go to the bathroom frequently throughout the night and have the usual contractions that can wake me up, I have actually been sleeping just fine. It's ridiculously uncomfortable to turn into any different positions, but other than that - I'm grateful for these last few weeks of good sleep. Best moment this week: We recorded a few songs for Daphne this week! My Mom wrote the sweetest lullaby for her a couple months ago, it's seriously the most beautiful + catchy song ev…

38 Week Bump Update

How far along: 38 weeksGender: GirlWeight gain: I've gained 1.2 lbs. this week. My overall weight gain is 7.8 lbs. Maternity clothes: Obviously. But mostly big shirts and leggings.  Stretch Marks: I've been slacking on applying my coconut oil. Still have the two marks on my right and left side.  Belly button in or out: Shockingly, it's still in. Sleep: I've been sleeping okay. I have contractions pretty much all day long and they typically wake me up throughout the night, but I try to get sleep anyway. I also have to go to the bathroom quite often throughout the night. Best moment this week: This week has been a bit rough, but the highlight has definitely been all of the amazing meals that my Mom has been making for us!Worst moment this week: Well, we all really thought that we would have had Daphne by now. And I've been walking around really uncomfortable and really hot. Trying to be as patient as I can, but I'm also trying to induce labor. You name it, I'v…

37 Week Bump Update

How far along: 37 weeksGender: GirlWeight gain: Haven't lost or gained any weight this week. Overall weight gain is 6.6 lbs. Maternity clothes: I wear what I feel most comfortable in nowadays. It tends to be leggings or stretchy shorts and large t-shirts. I have had to start wearing my nighttime nursing bra with nursing pads because I have been leaking pretty bad (and regular bras are sooo uncomfortable at this point). Hopefully that means that I won't have issues with my milk coming in after Daphne is born.  Stretch Marks: Well I now have a set of weird marks on both my left and right side. None yet on my belly and I'm still using coconut oil. Belly button in or out: Is flat an option? Sleep: I've been sleeping well this week, I've had to use the bathroom much more frequently during the night than I ever had during my whole pregnancy. But I've been able to fall back asleep just fine. I had a couple nights where my contractions were so strong that they woke me u…

36 Week Bump Update

How far along: 36 weeksGender: GirlWeight gain: I've gained 2.4 lbs. this week. Overall weight gain is at 6.6 lbs. Maternity clothes: I've been lounging in leggings mostly this week and big t-shirts. Whenever I go out for doctor's appointments I typically wear a maxi skirt or my maternity shorts.  Stretch Marks: Just the one weird one on my left side, still applying coconut oil all over.  Belly button in or out: In, but super flat. Sleep: I had a bit of insomnia earlier in the week, it was miserable. I moved to the couch so I wouldn't wake up my husband and I just watched paid programming and this show called "Jail" until about 4 in the morning when I finally went to sleep. Then I had another night where I just didn't feel comfortable in bed, so I slept on the couch until about 6:30 am and then was able to sleep in bed. It's been a weird week. Best moment this week: My husband has been writing Daphne a song and this week he finished it and showed it to…
